Fitness Assessments
The WRC and Employee Gym now offers fitness assessments for its members.
To provide you with the resources to help you take control of your physical health, the WRC & Employee Gym will be offering fitness assessments beginning in October 2022. WRC & Employee Gym members are eligible for one free fitness assessment per semester, which includes a 3D body composition analysis, blood pressure assessment, and resting metabolic rate analysis. Please see a fitness attendant at the front desk to sign up for your free assessment.
The benefit of completing a fitness assessment
The fitness assessment will provide you with information about your body composition and the number of calories you burn per day. Together, this information will help you program your exercise and nutrition to reach your fitness goal, whether that is weight loss, weight gain, muscle hypertrophy, or establishing healthy habits. Regular fitness assessments each semester will allow you to track changes in your body over time and allow you to make informed decisions about your exercise and nutrition.
Research Opportunities
The Wellness Research Center offers opportunities to participate in research within the Division of Kinesiology through its Institute of Exercise Physiology and Rehabilitation Science. This research is led by faculty and students and explores the efficacy of different exercise modalities on strength and conditioning, as well as rehabilitation. Some recent opportunities to participate in research are listed below:
- Effects of 4D Dietary Supplement on Perceptual-Cognitive and Visual-Motor Performance
- Isotonic vs Isokinetic Leg Extensions: Differences in Neuromuscular Function
- Low back pain and disability in active population
- Neuromuscular Attributes during Deadlift Variations in Individuals with Acute, Nonspecific Low Back Pain: A Pilot Study
- Time of Day Effects on Autonomic Function and Anaerobic Performance using a Non-Motorized Treadmill

Fitness Assessments
The WRC & Employee gym currently offers 3D body composition analysis, blood pressure and resting metabolic rate (RMR) analysis.
Fitness assessments are scheduled in 30-minute windows. Testing will be completed within 30 minutes.
WRC & Employee Gym members may receive one fitness assessment per semester.
Stop by the reception desk in the WRC and one of the fitness attendants will schedule your fitness assessment.
- Do not exercise the day of the test (after the test is fine).
- You should be fasting for 4 hours prior to your appointment
- Avoid stimulants such as caffeine or cold medications. Prescription medications should be taken as normal.
Minimal and form-fitting clothing is required for the 3D body composition analysis to get accurate results. Options include sports bras, form-fitting tights, leggings, underwear, or form-fitting swimwear. There are no clothing requirements for the Blood pressure or resting metabolic rate assessments.
You will be asked to stand on the fit3D platform in a relaxed and natural position while holding the handles and looking directly forward. The platform will rotate 360 degrees during which time three cameras will take 1200 images of your body. The test takes approximately 40 seconds and provides body fat percentage, fat mass, lean mass, body circumference measurements, body shape rating, waist to hip ratio, trunk to leg volume ratio, and assessments of posture and balance. Check out these example results.
You will be invited to recline and relax in a chair for 5 minutes before the test. Following this, you will be given a meta breather mouthpiece to breathe into. This mouthpiece will be connected to one end of a disposable tube, which will be connected to the device. A nose clip will be placed on your nose. You will be asked to breathe normally into the tube for 10 minutes. You will be breathing in fresh air from the room, but the gas you breathe out will be collected by the metabolic analyzer. The device will analyze your expired air to calculate your resting metabolic rate. Check out these example results.
Do WRC & Employee Gym staff provide exercise prescriptions based on results of a fitness assessment?
No.
Information on how to interpret your results are provided as part of each assessment. As a policy, WRC and Employee Gym staff members will not provide extensive feedback or interpretations of individual results.
