The Synergistic Effects of Resistance Training with Betaine Supplementation Among Recreationally Active Older Adults
Physical health declines beyond the normal aging process have become increasingly prevalent, with many older adults experiencing conditions such as sarcopenia and physical frailty. These conditions begin at the cellular level through the breakdown of cells outpacing the regeneration of new cells, alongside compromised integrity of cellular structures contributing to frailty. Betaine has largely been studied among younger adults as a sports supplement; despite its potential to address critical issues related to aging, to the best of our knowledge there has not been any study examining betaine supplementation with an older adult population. If betaine consumption can improve cellular health status on its own, and/or further improve the known cellular health benefits of resistance training, then it may have a potential future role in preventing or treating these conditions.
We expect that you will be in this research study for six consecutive weeks, with an estimated total of 16.5 hours of active participation throughout the six-week study period. You will be asked to consume a dietary supplement (betaine anhydrous or maltodextrin) once daily for six consecutive weeks and complete in-person supervised resistance training (i.e., weight lifting) workouts with the research team at the University of Central Florida twice weekly for the last four weeks of the study period. You will also wear a physical activity monitor (i.e., a watch) and complete three food recalls per week for the six-week study period. Three assessment visits will occur during the study, with strength testing, body composition testing, and questionnaires being completed at each assessment visit.
Inclusion Qualifications:
- Male or female adult aged ≥60 years old
- Free from uncontrolled metabolic disease (as determined via health history questionnaire and resting blood pressure assessment)
- Free from implanted pacemakers/defibrillators
- Recreationally active (≥150 min. per week of self-reported moderate physical activity and at least one resistance training/weight-bearing session per week)
- Cleared to begin an exercise program as determined by all “no” answers on the modified Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PARQ)
- Able to reliably initiate a video conferencing call (e.g., Zoom, WhatsApp, Facetime, etc.) with your laptop or mobile phone
Exclusion Qualifications:
You may not participate in this research opportunity if any of the following applies to you:- Missing limbs/prosthetic limbs
- Pregnancy
- Known diagnosis of a metabolic condition called homocystinuria
- Known allergies to betaine or maltodextrin
