The impact of vaping on laryngeal and respiratory functions

The Voice & Swallow Mechanics Lab at the University of Central Florida (UCF) is looking for adults aged 18-30 years to participate in a research study on the impact of electronic cigarette use (also frequently referred to as vaping or juuling) on voice and cough. Qualified participants will attend one session that is 1 hour long on UCF’s campus. You will be asked to answer surveys, complete voice recordings, take breathing measurements, and have video taken of your vocal cords with a camera placed in your mouth.

Inclusion Qualifications:

  • Adult, aged 18-30 years old
  • Native speaker of American English
  • Either non-smoker / non-vaper for at least 5 years -OR- a daily vaper for a
    minimum of 6 months.

Exclusion Qualifications:

You may not participate in this research opportunity if any of the following applies to you:
  • Current/previous neurological disorder/disease
  • History of speech, language or hearing disorder
  • Asthma or respiratory problems
  • If you have a severe gag reflex, you might not want to participate in this study.
