CHPS RESEARCH STUDIES
Passive blood flow restriction and active recovery on muscle recovery
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of different recovery strategies following strenuous exercise. Specifically, this study will compare passive blood flow restriction, active recovery (cycling), and passive rest to determine their effects on muscle function and recovery. The study will consist of seven visits over 9-11 days (8-9 hours total participation time). The first visit will take approximately 60 minutes, the second visit approximately 80 minutes, the third visit approximately 105-115 minutes, the fourth through sixth visits approximately 60-70 minutes each, and the seventh visit approximately 45-50 minutes.
Inclusion Qualifications:
- Are a recreationally active female (≥150 minutes per week of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity) between the ages of 18-35.
- Meet the study’s aerobic fitness eligibility requirement (assessed during Visit 1: achieve an age-specific “fair” or greater cardiorespiratory fitness classification (≥34.6 ml∙kg-1∙min-1) during the maximal graded exercise test).
- Are willing to come in for all seven study visits and complete all study activities.
Exclusion Qualifications:
You may not participate in this research opportunity if any of the following applies to you:- Have known cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, vascular, neurological, or musculoskeletal disease, and/or coronary heart disease.
- Use prescription medication (e.g., beta-blockers) known to substantially influence cardiovascular function or blood pressure (excluding birth control).
- Have a current lower-body injury, persistent knee pain, or any condition that would limit participation in strenuous exercise or maximal strength testing.
- Are currently pregnant.
