Effects of Caffeine on Cycling Performance
This research is being done to understand the effect of caffeine ingestion on physical performance using maximal and submaximal performance assessments. The submaximal performance assessment used for this study is called Physical working capacity and it can be measured using different thresholds, such as Rate of perceived exertion, pain intensity threshold and heart rate threshold. The researcher wants to better understand how caffeine ingestion would affect these thresholds.
Inclusion Qualifications:
- Male and female adults (18-35 years of age).
- Are physically active (≥150 minutes per week of physical activity plus muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days)
- Willing to follow all pre-visit restrictions (no caffeine within 12 hours, no alcohol within 24 hours, no strenuous exercise within 24 hours, no food within 3 hours, at least 6 hours of sleep the night before and arrive well hydrated).
- Not pregnant, not breastfeeding, and not actively trying to become pregnant during study participation, based on self-report.
Exclusion Qualifications:
You may not participate in this research opportunity if any of the following applies to you:- Any musculoskeletal injury that limits your ability to complete the exercise task.
- Surgery, injury, or fracture involving your bones, muscles, and/or joints within the previous 6 months.
- Individuals with a history of hypertension, pre-diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or other heart conditions.
- Individuals prone to severe anxiety, high stress, or insomnia, or individuals with known caffeine sensitivity or prior adverse reaction to caffeine.
- Pregnant, breastfeeding, or actively trying to become pregnant during study participation, to avoid the potential risks that acute high-dose caffeine ingestion (up to 400 mg) and severe-intensity exhaustive exercise may pose to a fetus or nursing infant.
- Current use of medications, supplements, or medical conditions for which caffeine ingestion or maximal/severe-intensity exercise is contraindicated, as determined by screening responses and investigator review.
- Unwillingness or inability to comply with caffeine, exercise, food, or visit-timing restrictions.
