Effect of Sodium Bicarbonate on Endurance Running
This research is being done to learn whether a commercially available sodium bicarbonate hydrogel system can improve running performance in a 5 km time trial and how it affects responses in your body systems during running. Many runners experience stomach discomfort with traditional sodium bicarbonate, so this study is testing a different delivery method that is designed to reduce those symptoms. The information gained may help researchers better understand how supplements influence endurance performance.
Inclusion Qualifications:
We invite you to take part in a research study because you are a male runner between the ages of 18 and 40 who has been running at least 4 times per week for the past 3 years and has a recent 5 km personal best under 20 minutes. You must also be:
- Free from injury and able to safely complete treadmill running
- Willing to follow all pre visit restrictions (no caffeine within 24 hours, no strenuous exercise within 24 hours, no food within 3 hours)
Exclusion Qualifications:
You may not participate in this research opportunity if any of the following applies to you:- You have a clinically diagnosed gastrointestinal disorder.
- You have high blood pressure, known cardiovascular disease, or kidney disease.
- You currently use buffering supplements, such as sodium bicarbonate or beta-alanine.
- You take medications that may affect acid-base balance, breathing, blood pressure, or cardiovascular responses to exercise, including diuretics, bicarbonate-containing antacids, or beta-blockers.
- You answer “yes” to any PAR-Q+ item.
- Your seated blood pressure after 5 minutes of rest is in the stage 1 hypertension range or higher (130–139 systolic and/or 80–89 diastolic).
Participate in this Research
Submitting this form will put you in contact with the main point of contact for this project. They will provide more information and determine if you meet all of the qualifications needed."*" indicates required fields
