CHPS RESEARCH STUDIES

The Reliability and Validity of Physical Working Capacity at Pain Intensity Threshold

The primary purpose of this study is to understand how your perception of pain relates to your ability to exercise on a stationary bike.

We expect that you will be in this research study for nine sessions, each separated by 48 – 72 hours. This will approximately take 3 – 4 weeks to complete. The first visit will take approximately 1 hour. Visits 2 – 9 will take approximately 45 minutes each. You will be asked to wear athletic shoes and clothing (shirt and shorts) that you can exercise in.

During this study you will be asked to complete surveys and questionnaires and become familiar with the testing procedures. A sensory test will also be administered such as pressure pain testing on your skin. You will also complete a graded exercise test on a stationary bike to determine your maximum oxygen intake and maximum power while exercising on the bike. All exercise trials will be completed on the stationary bike, cycling at varying levels of difficulty based on your performance from the graded exercise test.

Inclusion Qualifications:

  • Male between the age of 18 – 35 years old
  • Engage in endurance exercise (such as running, cycling, or swimming) at least 3-4 times per week

Exclusion Qualifications:

You may not participate in this research opportunity if any of the following applies to you:
  • Regular use of prescription pain medication
  • Current or history of having a pain condition that is on-going
  • Currently taking blood-thinning medication
  • Systemic medical condition known to affect sensation, such as uncontrolled diabetes or neurological conditions
  • Any condition where you cannot apply ice to your skin, (such as: uncontrolled high blood pressure, cold urticaria, cryoglobulinemia, paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, circulatory compromise)
  • Known presence of cardiovascular (heart), pulmonary (lung), or metabolic disease (such as diabetes)
  • Not physically ready to as indicated by the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire Plus (PAR-Q+)
  • Surgery, injury, or fracture involving your muscles or joints within the past 6 months
