Ricardo Atencio’s journey to UCF and his dream of studying to become a physician has truly been an international affair. “I’m originally from Venezuela, but when I was given the chance to move to the United States to continue my education, I took advantage of it.”
A native Spanish speaker, Ricardo worked on improving his English before taking science classes. “I started with basic English courses at Valencia College and went on to earn my associate in arts degree before transferring to UCF.”
Moving to the US and away from his family was a difficult decision, but Ricardo felt it was a good choice given the situation in Venezuela. “It’s very difficult there right now, not just for those seeking a good education, but for life in general due to the country’s economic issues.”
At UCF, Ricardo joined the testicular cancer research team, the Venezuelan Student Association, and served as a youth soccer coach at Hunter’s Creek Soccer Academy. He also volunteered at Shepherd’s Hope, Orlando Health, and completed an internship with a physician who subsequently hired him.
When asked about the progress he’s made since coming to UCF, Ricardo says, “I felt like a rookie baseball player during my first days at UCF, and now I feel like I’m in the major leagues ready for the big game.”
