For Orlando twins, Mia and Rhea Griffin, attending UCF was an easy decision. “We chose to attend UCF because it was close to home, but also because of the many resources available to students, especially in Health Sciences. When asked about the advice they’d give to new students, the twins agreed, “Avoid getting stuck in the commuter mindset; instead, spend more time on campus and engaging in the college experience.”
As undergraduates, both sisters worked as Research Assistants focusing on the quality of life in Hispanic breast cancer survivors. “It was great to work in a team environment where even the smallest task made an important contribution to the success of the research project. “One thing we realized while working on this project is that participants are more than just data – they’re people dealing with a lot of things, so sometimes you need to get out of thinking with the researcher brain and think more empathically.”
As they complete their final semester at UCF, Mia and Rhea are thrilled to be headed to the University of Connecticut’s School of Dental Medicine. As future dentists, Mia and Rhea look forward to making clients feel comfortable about going to the dentist and “paying it forward” by making dental services more accessible to underserved communities.
