CHPS RESEARCH STUDIES
Threshold Velocities in Runners
This research aims to determine running velocities at different physiological thresholds using a continuous graded exercise test (GXT) and four 8-minute discontinuous exercise tests.
Three key thresholds will be examined:
- Velocity at VO2 threshold represents the maximum velocity at which someone can run
without a significant increase in oxygen consumption rate over time. - Velocity at RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) threshold represents the maximum
velocity at which someone can run indefinitely without an increase in perceived effort. - Velocity at HR (Heart Rate) threshold represents the maximum velocity at which
someone can run without an increase in heart rate over time.
Inclusion Qualifications:
- 18-35 years old male
- Regularly engage in endurance exercise (running, cycling, swimming) 3-4x per week and training for an endurance event.
Exclusion Qualifications:
You may not participate in this research opportunity if any of the following applies to you:- Non-English speaking
- Known presence of cardiovascular, pulmonary, or metabolic disease
- Not physically ready to exercise without a medical exam as indicated by the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire Plus (PAR-Q+)
- Recent musculoskeletal injuries or surgeries
- Adults unable to consent
- Individuals who are not yet adults (infants, children, teenagers)
- Prisoners
- Pregnant women: excluded
