CHPS RESEARCH STUDIES

Lumbosacral Muscle Function and Respiratory Cycle

Why am I being invited to take part in a research study?
We invite you to take part in a research study because you are between the ages of 18-25 and enrolled at the University of Central Florida. You also fluently read and write in English, have no previous history of low back pain or low back injuries, or any significant neurological, respiratory, or cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, to your knowledge, you are not pregnant.

Why is this research being done?
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects respiration has on lumbosacral muscle function, measured through tensiomyography (TMG). TMG provides information on numerous aspects of muscle function, making it a valuable tool in the medical field. The data collected from this study may be used to create a standard protocol for examining muscle function via TMG, something that is currently lacking from research.

How long will the research last and what will I need to do?
We expect you will be in this research study for a single visit lasting about 45 minutes. You will be asked to complete a pre-study survey with information including height, weight, and other demographic data. We will then explain the TMG machinery and the various measurements that will be taken. You will be instructed to lie prone on the treatment table for the procedures to begin. More detailed information about the study procedures can be found under “What happens if I say yes, I want to be in this research?”

Is there any way being in this study could be bad for me?
The risks to participation are minimal and do not exceed the risks associated with activities found in daily life. Muscular fatigue and discomfort are among these risks, but both are of minimal probability and entirely reversible.

Will being in this study help me in any way?
There are no benefits to you from your taking part in this research. We cannot promise any benefits to others from your taking part in this research.

What happens if I do not want to be in this research?
Your participation in this study is voluntary. You are free to withdraw your consent and discontinue participation in this study at any time without prejudice or penalty. Your decision to participate or not participate in this study will in no way affect your continued enrollment, grades, employment or your relationship with UCF or the individuals who may have an interest in this study. Your alternative to participating in this research study is to not participate.
