Effects of Resistance Training on Mental Health
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of resistance training on coping skills and depression symptoms. We would like to understand if changes in your muscular strength are associated with your ability to cope with problems. Further, we would like to understand if changes in depressive symptoms would impact your quality of life.
Inclusion Qualifications:
- female, aged 18 to 25
- mild to moderate depressive symptoms according to the BDI-II
- not engaging in resistance/strength training for a minimum of 6 months
- available to attend a weekly small group training session on campus
Exclusion Qualifications:
You may not participate in this research opportunity if any of the following applies to you:- current cognitive therapy
- prescribed antidepressant medication
- diagnosis of a serious mental illness (SMI) such as schizophrenia
- pregnant or nursing
- current psychosis
- exercise contraindicated based on high health risk status as determined by the Physical Activity Risk Questionnaire (PAR-Q)
- unable to exercise due to any acute (e.g., musculoskeletal injury)
- chronic (e.g., uncontrolled asthma) condition
