UCF Healthcare Students Use Immersive Simulation to Learn from Fatal Burn Case

Written By: Heather Lovett | September 5, 2025

At the Rehabilitation Innovation Center, students are learning through a case study of a 22-year-old man who suffered fatal burn injuries and kidney failure. Using holograms, a 4D interactive simulation suite, and high-fidelity manikins, they follow the patient’s journey from the scene of the initial injury to bedside care. The program blends clinical decision-making with empathy, allowing students to assess vital signs, fluid levels and nutrition in real time. The technology-driven approach prepares future healthcare providers for hospital and clinical settings, while giving students a unique experience that enables them to learn beyond the textbook and helps shape their career goals.

“We are intentional about transforming workforce training by immersing students early in hyper realistic experiences that cultivate clinical reasoning and empathy,” Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs and Healthcare Innovation Bari Hoffman. “It’s clear these kinds of novel opportunities inspire students and gets them excited about what their future will look like as a healthcare professional.”

The Rehabilitation Innovation Center in the College of Health Professions and Sciences is a first-of-its-kind hub where faculty, students, and partners collaborate to advance healthcare through technology, education, and integrated care delivery. The center brings together research labs, creative spaces, and clinical programs to pioneer solutions that improve health outcomes and transform the future of rehabilitation.
