Maya Tcholakova, Ph.D., is a Fulbright Visiting Scholar from Bulgaria who recently wrapped up a semester-long research appointment in the School of Social Work.
Tcholakova was exploring the perspective of cultural humility in social work, including social work theory, education and practice.
“The concept of cultural humility focuses on the development of critical self-awareness to make an ongoing reflection on one’s own cultural biases and the power differentials that exist in society and reproduce in the helping relationships,” Tcholakova said.
Tcholakova said she chose UCF’s School of Social Work for her research because she had “heard about UCF’s strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.” She has spent the past semester attending workshops, conducting interviews and learning about various diversity topics addressed at UCF.
“Everyone has made me feel welcome,” Tcholakova said. “This is my first overseas academic experience and I have enjoyed it very much.”
