Pain Sensitivity in Female Endurance Athletes
This research is being conducted to examine the pain experience of female endurance athletes. Low energy availability, diet, sleep, and stress are known to affect the normal physiological processes in the female body, which may ultimately influence the sensitivity of the nervous system and sensitivity to pain. By expanding the knowledge of the endurance female athlete’s sensitivity to pain, we aim to better inform healthcare providers and improve overall treatment and care that recognizes the whole individual.
During the study, you will complete questionnaires and have your pain sensitivity assessed with Pressure Pain Threshold (PPT). PPT will be taken at 3 locations: upper trapezius, erector spinae at L4, and the rectus femoris muscle. You will come to the lab for one session which is approximately 60 minutes.
Inclusion Qualifications:
- Female endurance athlete between the ages of 18 and 39 years
- Actively engaged in > 300 minutes (5 hours) of aerobic exercise per week in the previous 6 months.
- Participants must also be able to read English
Exclusion Qualifications:
You may not participate in this research opportunity if any of the following applies to you:- Pregnancy
