CHPS RESEARCH STUDIES
Biopsychosocial Factors in Resistance Exercise in Individuals with Knee Pain
The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of different fatiguing levels of dynamic resistance exercise on individual pain threshold measures in people with knee pain.
This study consists of four testing sessions that are about 30 minutes – 1 hour each. During the first session, you will complete questionnaires that characterize your thoughts and feelings about pain and be briefly exposed to heat, cold, and pressure to examine your pain sensitivity. During the second, third, and fourth session, you will be performing a leg extension exercise for 3 sets at different fatiguing levels or a quiet rest intervention.
Inclusion Qualifications:
- 18-60 years old
- Knee pain intensity that is at least 3/10 within the past 24 hours
Exclusion Qualifications:
You may not participate in this research opportunity if any of the following applies to you:- history of knee surgery or fracture within the past 6 months
- history of a quadriceps tendon rupture
- history of a chronic pain condition, such as fibromyalgia
- Medical conditions that reduce your ability to feel light touch or pain, such as uncontrolled diabetes or neurological (nervous system) conditions
- blood clotting disorder, such as hemophilia
- known presence of cardiovascular, pulmonary, or metabolic disease
- current use of tobacco products
- any adverse reaction to the application of ice, such as: high blood pressure, conditions that cause hives or blood in your urine when exposed to cold, and any reductions in blood flow to your arms or legs.
- not physically ready to exercise without a medical exam as indicated by the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire + (PAR-Q+) (examined during screening)
- pain during active knee range of motion 0-90 degrees (examined during screening)
- unable to attend 4 sessions
- Pregnant
