Assessing the validity and agreement of the ActiGraph LEAP with the ActiGraph GT9X Link

Assessing the validity and agreement of the ActiGraph LEAP with the ActiGraph GT9X Link

We invite you to take part in a research study because you are 18 years of age or older, can speak/understand English, and living in the Central Florida area. You cannot participate in this study if you have open wounds on the upper arm or will be away from the Central Florida during the duration of the seven-day study period.

Accelerometers are devices that measure how fast something is moving or how its speed or direction changes. The ActiGraph LEAP is the newest accelerometer from ActiGraph company. However, very few studies have utilized this compact and wearable accelerometer due to its recent release and therefore, a comparison to previously used wearable accelerometers, such as the ActiGraph GT9X, is needed. This research aims to fill in the gap of knowledge regarding the performance of the ActiGraph LEAP by comparing its measurements directly with the previously used ActiGraph GT9X Link.

We expect that you will be in this research study for approximately seven days with two in-person lab visits lasting less than 20 minutes each.
You will be asked to wear two compact wearable accelerometers (test devices) on your non-dominant wrist (e.g., if you are right-handed, you will wear them on your left wrist) for seven consecutive days. The first in-person visit will involve the application of the two test devices. A member of the study team will review the purpose and procedures of the study, review the consent form, present the two accelerometer devices to you, and address any questions. You will be asked to wear both accelerometer devices on your non-dominant wrist continuously for the next seven days except not near water. If you need more time to think about participation in the study or need to discuss with others, a visit will be rescheduled to discuss your decision. If you decide to participate, you will be asked to wear the two accelerometer devices. During the second in-person visit (approximately seven days after the initial visit), you will return the test devices.

The risks of this study are minimal and do not exceed the risks associated with activities found in daily life. Since each device is wrist-worn, you will feel slight compression on your non-dominant wrist. The bands for each wrist device are made of silicone and it is possible that it could generate irritation on the wrist. If irritation occurs, or if you need to take off the devices for a long period time (> one hour) due to the devices hindering your health or way of living, please contact the Principal Investigator (PI) and research assistant referenced within
this consent form.

We cannot promise any benefits to you or others from your taking part in this research. However, a possible benefit is an understanding of your physical activity and sleep levels over the seven consecutive days of wearing the test devices.

Participation in research is completely voluntary. You can decide whether to participate or not to participate.

Your participation in this study is voluntary. You are free to withdraw your consent and discontinue participation in this study at any time without prejudice or penalty. Your decision to participate in this study will not affect your continued enrollment, grades, employment or
relationship with UCF or those who may be interested in this study.
