Knight Life @UCFCHPS Spotlights Exercise and Sport Physiology Internship

Written By: Paul Kelly | November 25, 2024

Kinesiology student Connor Humphreys gained hands-on experience supporting individuals with neurological impairments, including spinal cord injury, stroke and Parkinson’s disease, during his internship at the Center of Recovery and Exercise (CORE). This specialized facility focuses on helping clients regain mobility and enhance their quality of life.

As part of the Exercise and Sport Physiology track, Humphreys’ internship provided direct experience in various therapeutic settings. This practical training connected his academic knowledge to real-world scenarios and helped prepare him for his future as a Doctor of Physical Therapy.

The Exercise and Sport Physiology track offers optional internships, like the one at CORE, for undergraduate kinesiology students aiming to pursue careers in physical therapy or athletic training. These internships provide valuable hands-on experience with key concepts, helping students develop foundational skills and determine if these career paths are the right fit for them. This unique aspect of the program sets it apart from many other kinesiology programs.

In addition to gym-based exercises, Humphreys worked in the pool with clients on locomotor training. “The pool is a great environment for weight-bearing exercises,” Humphreys explains. “Clients who couldn’t walk on their own when they started are actually able to begin taking strides.”

Humphreys says his time at CORE was transformative, both professionally and personally. “I learned that exercise truly is medicine,” he shares. “It was inspiring to see clients, some of whom were told they might never walk again, building new neural pathways and regaining function in their limbs.”

Humphreys credits the internship for providing him with a better understanding of what this clientele needs. “The main difference is being able to have real hands-on confidence that you typically don’t get in a classroom,” Humphreys says. “After this internship, I feel much more prepared to work with a neuro population.”

Humphreys’ journey at CORE is highlighted on the latest episode of Knight Life @UCF CHPS. The series showcases students’ unique experiences in internships, research, study abroad programs, specialized courses, student organizations and other high-impact opportunities that prepare them for their careers.
