Examining Test-Retest Reliability of Five Bioimpedance Devices
Why is this research being done?
The purpose of this study is to determine how reliable bioelectrical devices are at measuring the bioelectrical properties of your cells. These devices send small, imperceptible electrical currents through the body and measure how quickly the current returns to the device (i.e., how much your cells impede, resist, and react to the current, thereby slowing it down). While more people are using these devices clinically, it is not well known how reliable those measurements are.
We are also interested in determining how reliable a commercially available bioelectrical impedance analysis (BICA) scale is when compared to a similar laboratory-based BIA device.
How long will the research last and what will I need to do?
We expect that you will be in this research study for one study visit, lasting approximately 60-75 minutes.
You will be asked to arrive at the lab having fasted for at least 3 hours, abstained from caffeine for at least 12 hours, and avoided alcohol and strenuous physical activity/exercise for at least 24 hours prior to your visit. You will also be asked to arrive wearing light, compressive athletic clothing (e.g., compression shirt, compression shorts, sports bra, leggings, spandex) and be free of hair on your right hand and foot. During the study visit, you will complete several brief questionnaires, provide a urine sample to ensure adequate hydration, and then complete a total of 10 body composition assessments in randomized order (2 back-to-back assessments per device, on 5 total devices).
Is there any way being in this study could be bad for me?
The risks to participation are minimal and do not exceed the risks associated with activities found in daily life.
Will being in this study help me any way?
We cannot promise any benefits to you or others from your taking part in this research. However, possible benefits include receiving printed or electronic copies of your body composition results from each device.
What happens if I do not want to be in this research?
Your participation in this study is voluntary. You are free to withdraw your consent and discontinue participation in this study at any time without prejudice or penalty. Your decision to participate or not participate in this study will in no way affect your continued enrollment, grades, employment or your relationship with UCF or the individuals who may have an interest in this study.
Your alternative to participating in this research study is to not participate.
