CHPS RESEARCH STUDIES

Effectiveness of a Novel Sock Design on Ankle and Postural Stability

Why is this research being done?
This study seeks to determine the effectiveness of a novel sock design on ankle and leg function, including strength and balance. This may aid in determining potential benefits that this sock design has, and if it should be implemented as a model for future designs.

How long will the research last and what will I need to do?
We expect that you will be in this research study for one 45-minute session.

You will be asked to perform several strength and balance assessments, doing each assessment with the socks on and again without the socks on. In the comments section of the data collection form, you will be asked to express your opinion on your performance of assessments with and without the socks.

More detailed information about the study procedures can be found under “What happens if I say yes, I want to be in this research?”

Is there any way being in this study could be bad for me?
This research study involves balance and stability tests, which may present potential injury risks such as falls, strains, or sprains. You could experience discomfort or loss of balance during assessments. If assessments are performed with improper form, it is possible that you may suffer an ankle sprain and or bruises as a result of falling on the ground. Furthermore, if you are allergic to the sock’s material, it is possible that you will experience skin irritation around the foot and ankle. Lastly, if not used to performing movements such as squatting and hopping, you may experience soreness following the study.

More detailed information about the risks of this study can be found under “Is there any way being in this study could be bad for me? (Detailed Risks)

Will being in this study help me anyway?
