CHPS RESEARCH STUDIES

Comparing Pain Perception Among Individuals who are Resistance Trained and Untrained

The primary purpose of this research study is to compare pain perception, pain response to exercise, and pain-related psychosocial factors between individuals who routinely participate in resistance training (lifting weights) and those who do not.

During the study, you will complete kettlebell swings tabata style for 20 seconds followed by 10 seconds of rest, 8 times. This study is one visit that is about two hours.

Inclusion Qualifications:

  • Participants must either be defined as resistance trained (engaging in resistance exercise with weights at least 2x/week for the past 8 weeks) OR untrained (do not meet ACSM criteria for being physically active: strength training less than 2x/week and less than 150 minutes of aerobic exercise per week)
  • 18-50 years old
  • Healthy (no pain or injury)

Exclusion Qualifications:

You may not participate in this research opportunity if any of the following applies to you:
  • non-English speaking
  • systemic medical conditions that affect sensation such as: uncontrolled diabetes
  • history of low back surgery or fracture within the past six months
  • blood clotting disorder such as hemophilia
  • contraindication to the application of ice (blood pressure >140/90 mmHg, cold urticaria, cryoglobulinemia, paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, circulatory compromise)
  • unable to exercise without a medical clearance (assessed with PAR-Q+)
  • exceed pressure safety threshold (assessed during screening)
