Co-Designing a Suicide Prevention Mobile App with Youth
We are excited to inform you about a research project we are working on at the University of Central Florida (UCF).
Our project involves examining safety planning strategies and app features for the development of a safety planning app for youth. To ensure the application we create is relevant and useful, we are looking to get input and recommendations from youth with lived mental health and/or suicide risk experiences.
For this study, we are looking to recruit youth (between ages 14 and 17) who have a history of engaging in suicide-related behaviors (i.e. suicide ideation, suicide attempts) and/or who exhibit risk factors (i.e., history of mental illness, substance use, self-injury) associated with suicide risk.
For participants who agree to participate in this study, we expect that it will take up to 3 hours. Participants and their parent/guardian will first meet with the research team for a 30-minute orientation session to set up Zoom and ask any questions before proceeding with the study. Participants will then be part of a focus group session which will take no more than 2 hours. This session will be conducted with a team of UCF researchers in person or remotely via Zoom.
During the focus group session, participants will be asked to complete some example tasks using a mobile app prototype, collaborate with participants on new design ideas, and participate in a group discussion. They will be asked to speak their thoughts aloud and type/draw any design ideas they have.
For their time, participants will be compensated with a $20 gift card after completion of the focus group.
We intend to hold focus groups beginning in September 2025 through March 2026. We hope you will consider participating in this important study.
