Automation of Ultrasound Imaging in Patients with and without a History of Low Back Pain
The purpose of this study is to establish how ultrasound (US) measures of core muscle thickness are reproducible between manual (measured by researchers) and automated artificial intelligence (AI) measurement of images in individuals with and without a history of low back pain (LBP).
We expect that you will be in this research study for two 1.5-2 hour sessions that are at least 48 hours apart, but not more than one week apart.
You will be asked to report to the research laboratory for the first and second days of testing, complete questionnaires regarding your demographics, and health history. You will also complete a series of movements, including lying on a table, standing, and doing a squat on one leg. An ultrasound probe will be placed on both sides of your abdomen with an elastic belt during these movements to measure muscle activity throughout the tests. Following testing in the laboratory, you will return for a second visit to complete the same movements with the ultrasound on both sides of your abdomen.
Inclusion Qualifications:
- At least 18 years old
- Either report having a history of low back pain (LBP) (at least 3 episodes of pain in the last year or 5 episodes in your lifetime) OR have no history of LBP throughout your lifetime to be in the non-LBP group
- An episode of LBP means that you had pain in the lower back region that made you change your daily activities for at least 24 hours.
Exclusion Qualifications:
You may not participate in this research opportunity if any of the following applies to you:- Any current injury that would limit your ability to do physical activity such as a single leg squat
- Currently pregnant
- Have a balance disorder
