What is hearing loss?

Definition – “A reduction in hearing sensitivity” (Stach, 2003).
Individuals may experience hearing loss as a result of noise exposure; ear blockage, such as impacted wax; and chronic ear infections. They also may experience associated symptoms such as tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and/or hyperacusis (increased sensitivity to loud sounds).

Do you experience any of the following signs and symptoms of hearing loss?

  • difficulty understanding speech in quiet or noise
  • difficulty hearing on the phone and understanding speech
  • difficulty hearing the television and understanding speech
  • ringing in the ears
  • aural fullness/pressure in the ears
  • family and friends expressing concerns about your ability to hear and understand speech
